Note on oud wood: oud is a resin produced by the Indonesian Agarwood tree when it is infected by fungus. The resin is an immune response that permeates the wood and creates a complex leathery/sour/woody/salty/ambery-smelling substance used in traditional Arab perfumes and eastern incenses. Increasingly, oud is popping up in western-style fragrances.

Teva Sandal Review

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The traveling backpacker looking for sandals that are affordable, durable, and (extremely) comfortable would do well to look at Teva’s Mush line of flip flops.

They feature rubber unders, durapontex EVA midsoles, and soft Mush EVA uppers. EVA stands for Ethylene Vinyl Acetate and is a shock-absorbent polymer used in sports padding and athletic shoes. These are THE most comfortable sandals I have ever worn. In addition, every other pair of sandals I’ve ever bought have broken down on me while traveling (usually the top portion will come off from the sole). After a year of hard use I have yet to see this happen to my own (or my friends’) Tevas.

However there are a few drawbacks to this design that keep them from being perfect. The tread at the bottom does not grip well on wet, sheer surfaces like tile, linoleum, or metal. Special care should be taken when using these as shower slippers or when walking on wet surfaces. Also, the Mush upper and cloth straps dry slowly. I would replace the straps with nylon material.

Even with these shortcomings, Tevas are still my favorite line of casual footwear and I can’t recommend them enough.

MSRP is $24, however check out Amazon.com or Sierratradingpost.com for special deals and sales.

Sanuk Shoe (sorry Sandal!) Review

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Sanuk’s (pronounced Sah-Nook) marketing campaign is “It’s not a shoe, it’s a sandal.”

After wearing them for the past 6 months I’d have to agree. They’re lightweight, extremely comfortable, breathe well, and are easy to put on/take off. Although a bit trendy (e.g. hemp models, worn by surfers/rock climbers/musicians, cheeky website campaign) and expensive ($55-$65 – look on sights like Amazon.com for deals), Sanuks are a quality product for lazy people like me who hate to fiddle with laces and just want to slip something on and off when heading out the house.

Unfortunately, because of their sandal-like nature, care should be taken when walking on wet, smooth surfaces like linoleum, tile, and metal. Also, I wish they would make them in solid black with no fringes so that I could wear them to the office.

However, for laid-back weekend shoes that you can wear to the beach, these are hard to beat.
Available online and at your local REI.

Check’em out….Brah.
